Harbors
Road Trip to Bar/Southwest/Northwest Harbors
Okay, wedding season is officially activated. I had my first away-trip this past weekend for a whole bunch of wedding coverage in Bar Harbor.
Sometimes these trips are fun and exciting and sometimes they are hard and depressing. Sometimes I go on these trips and I love the freedom and sometimes I start missing my wife and kids the second I leave. This trip was a little more like the latter. It’s fine. I got through it and had some fun along the way. Also, I got to ride on a boat so there’s that.
Shooting in Bar Harbor is rough. It’s a really long drive and hotels and Airbnbs are outrageously priced. I’m not going to gatekeep so I will share with you all that the place shown in the photo above is where I stay at every time in the the area now. It’s in Southwest Harbor so it’s about 20 minutes from the center of Bar Harbor and less than 15 minutes from Acadia National Park. It’s very reasonably priced, it has a small Maine residence discount, and most rooms have a little outdoor patio overlooking the harbor. It’s nothing fancy, it’s a very old school motor lodge but it’s clean. It’s right around the corner from a cool ice cream place that sometimes has vegan flavors and a good taco place that I can’t get enough of.
My wedding coverage started Friday night. The couple is from out of state so instead of doing an engagement session they hired me to shoot their rehearsal dinner and welcome party, which was happening on a sunset cruise. It was awesome. There are a bunch of little islands throughout the harbor including one with Egg Rock Lighthouse and about 200 harbor seals.
After the cruise I moseyed back to the motel taking some photos along the way in Northwest Harbor before settling in and watching the NBA Finals before passing out.
I woke up the next morning way too early and needed to occupy myself with something before the wedding started. The motel tv had TMC On-Demand so I watched Badlands for the millionth time.
The wedding day was long but pretty easy and fun. They had a golf simulator during the reception which is something I haven’t seen at a wedding before.
The next morning I set off for home trying to check out some book stores and snack places along the way while avoiding some heavy rain. I saw a giant lobsterman laid out on his back in Searsport.
I shot a bunch of film of some other stuff I won’t bother talking about until it gets developed.
Next up will be a wedding with some familiar faces at The Cliff House in York which I’m really looking forward to. Then it’ll be whatever. My Saturdays are pretty much booked until the middle of October. Wish me luck.
